Clemson has to get better in a hurry

CLEMSON — It might not be time to panic, but Clemson coach Tommy Bowden definitely has reasons to be concerned.
On Saturday, his Clemson Tigers self-destructed in a 13-3 loss to Georgia Tech. The Tigers (4-1, 2-1 ACC) had a punt blocked, fumbled a punt, missed four field goals, dropped several passes, missed open receivers, allowed six sacks and gave up 145 yards to a running back that wasn’t even 100 percent healthy.

Gamecocks overcome changes

COLUMBIA (AP) — South Carolina linebacker Marvin Sapp stopped for a moment to make sure what he wanted to say.
The Gamecock junior had just helped his team to a 38-21 victory over Mississippi State on Saturday, a game when his team used a new young quarterback in Chris Smelley and played without all-star linebacker Jasper Brinkley.

ATLANTA (AP) — Tashard Choice simply wasn’t going to accept another loss. He spoke up before the game, then again at halftime. He lugged a sledgehammer on the field to fire up his teammates even more. Most important, he ran 32 times on an ailing hamstring to help Georgia Tech end its two-game losing streak.

FSU’s Lee’s sparks victory over Alabama

(AP) — Bobby Bowden not only got a win over Alabama in his first try against the school he’d grown up dreaming of coaching, but he may have also discovered the playmaker he’s been desperately searching for in recent years. And while he’s leaving the formal decision on a starting quarterback to offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher, Bowden thinks that player could be Xavier Lee.
