Moped wreck leaves one dead
PICKENS — A 30-year-old Pickens County man died on the scene of a Sunday moped wreck.
Lewis Monroe, of 140 Heritage Drive near Pickens, died from blunt force trauma after the state route 183 crash at 12:50 a.m., according to Pickens County Deputy Coroner Thomas Smith.
Driving a moped northbound without wearing a helmet, Monroe went off the right shoulder before losing control, said Lance Cpl. Brian McDougald, South Carolina Highway Patrol spokesperson.
Monroe was ejected from the moped about three miles south of the City of Pickens and landed on the roadway. A Nissan four-door driven by 20-year-old Christopher Robinson of Pickens struck Monroe while going northbound, McDougald said.
Robinson, who was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured, reportedly could not see Monroe on the road.
State troopers do not believe speed is a factor in the wreck. Criminal charges are pending further investigation, McDougald said, as is an alcohol test for Monroe.
