Hayden, Schwartz signed to Panthers practice squad

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) _ The Carolina Panthers have signed five players to the practice squad, including draft picks Nick Hayden and Geoff Schwartz.

Running back DeCori Birmingham, receiver William Buchanon and safety Joe Fields were also signed Sunday. All five were released by the Panthers a day earlier as the team got down to the 53-man regular-season limit.

The Panthers still have three more practice-squad spots to fill.

Hayden was the Panthers’ sixth-round pick in April, but faced heavy competition at defensive tackle. Schwartz was cut after the Panthers decided to keep fellow offensive lineman and seventh-round pick Mackenzy Bernadeau.

Practice squad members can practice with the team during the week, but are not eligible to play in games.
