Lions blitz Wade Hampton for first-round victory

CENTRAL — After taking the Western AAA region title against Pickens last week, the Daniel High School softball team showed no mercy on the diamond to the visiting Generals from Wade Hampton, trouncing them 11-1 in five innings on Thursday in the Class AAA district playoffs.

The Lions couldn’t get much going early in play, but it didn’t matter by the end, as an early lead by Wade Hampton yielded only a stronger response by Daniel.

The Generals’ Hannah Milles put up a run in the first, after nabbing second, third and home on passed balls. The go-ahead run would be the only scoring either team did for the next two innings.

While it was still anyone’s game, the Lions prompted a fierce attack, scoring six runs in the third.

“They were patient,” Daniel head coach Kate Floyd said. “After the girls saw the pitcher, they got comfortable in the box. Everyone got a piece of the action tonight and that’s awesome.”

The rally started when winning pitcher Jenna Carnes loaded the bases with her single up the middle. Then, it was Alex Oliver who cleared two bags with her RBI double to right field, bumping the score 2-1, Daniel. With only one out, the Hoover sisters, Hayley and Carley, both connected for an RBI rip to left and center, respectively. Following a pair of walks, Carnes made it to the box again, this time connecting for two RBIs, pulling away 6-1 by the end of the third.

The defense continued the rally for the Lions as relief pitcher Carley Hoover threw three straight strikeouts, ending Wade Hampton’s chance at working the bases.

In the fourth, Mary Cate Garrett laid down a picture perfect bunt, scoring Hannah Gaines from third after a sliding triple to lead off the inning. Another pair of singles preceded Carley Hoover’s rip to center, bringing in another RBI. Now 8-1, the Generals were quickly losing any pep they had in their step prior to the Lions’ rally.

With no answer to Daniel’s solid play on both ends of the spectrum, Garrett showed up again with an RBI triple, ending the game with the 10-run rule in the fifth.

The Lions will play Travelers Rest tonight, Friday, at home starting at 6 p.m.
